decadent elegance

November 29, 2010

If you are a MEET market regular you can’t have missed Dimitra Mavrikou and her lovely jewelry! Her stall is full of lace and frill, gold and black  and also some vintage elements transformed into rings or earings!

*Tell us a few words about you!

I was raised downtown in the 80s.growing up,during the 90s,i found out a few things about myself, such as that i had a great love for things from past decades.I mainly listened to music from the 60s&70sand dressed accordingly!

*Is that what you always wanted to do?

From a really early age i loved crafting and i learned how to knit and embroid. When i was younger i would always make stuff like jewellery, bags and decoratives as gifts for my friends. As i got older i realized that, that was what i really wanted to do! So just before i got my degree in international and european studies,i decided it was the time to make my dream come true!

*The difficulties you came across and you still deal with freelancing?

Naturally, when you’re a freelance you come across many difficulties, the greater being you have to live off on an income that is not steady. However i love so much what i do,that i’m trying my best to overcome difficulties as such.

*Where do you draw your inspiration?

Anything around me can be an inspiration for me.I use a wide range of references for my designs, which enable me to use a mixture of fabrics, buttons, laces, metal, knitting and emboiding. My pieces are influenced by victorian elegance and a late 1960’s attitude.

*What do you think of the independent scene here in Greece? Is there any? Do people turn to people instead of the usual clothing and accessory chains?

In the past few years there is a rise of independent artists and craftsmen in Greece. Events like the Meet Market have helped those people show their work to a larger audience. People are turning to handmade and unique creations more and more. Maybe this is due to an inner need to stand out from the crowd in a time when corporate companies are the ones really ruling the world

*Last but not least, your 5 favorite bands

Janis Joplin, The Doors , Tori Amos, The Beatles, Scissor Sisters

You can find Dimitra Maurikou every month at the MEET market. Don’t forget the Christmas edition taking place in December. Check some more of her work in her blog.
